It's been a lot of YouTube and podcasts: Becks at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLWU00P8chI" target="_blank">Tiny Fibre Studio</a>, the<a href="https://twoewesfiberadventures.com/blogs/podcast" target="_blank"> Two Ewes Podcast</a> with Kelly and Marsha are a couple of my go-tos, but if it's spinning related I'll pop it on just for the info and the visuals (in the case of videos).<div><br /></div><div>The other day I watched a video Becks made about making striping yarn, (link above) and I thought I would try out her technique. </div><div>I happened to have an old pack of needle felting roving in natural shades from Fiber Trends. </div><div><br /></div><div> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYznB4kH6sJ6IwXVt3HUM98knFhvjbcUrAbfwxAQdABNTU9jnWBet1aLLERq_hTZOBw5ZhjlGvyqvml4mY2we0Y54vO_pcJl7Z5G7CLFciUM50xmvtqlsks4Xy6ceOrpScCmtw9NbXLr0W/s274/Roving+pack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="209" data-original-width="274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYznB4kH6sJ6IwXVt3HUM98knFhvjbcUrAbfwxAQdABNTU9jnWBet1aLLERq_hTZOBw5ZhjlGvyqvml4mY2we0Y54vO_pcJl7Z5G7CLFciUM50xmvtqlsks4Xy6ceOrpScCmtw9NbXLr0W/d/Roving+pack.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I knew I wanted to try chain plying, so I spun all the fiber straight through onto one bobbin. </div><div>I wish I had taken more photos, but it was late at night (darn you <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/shows/grantchester/#" target="_blank">Grantchester</a>, and the hunkiest, broodiest, ginger vicar around [I'm behind a season or two]), and I had a margarita so my photos (and, as it turns out, my plying) were not super hot (definitely not as hot as Sidney Chambers).</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNXUJQx0B-jKh-FJ6hmW5JNqyY_5p7kceo0ZKpNH3AOP_I6IWSmRr-JmR9ST6EzSUDmCvwM9C7r7BEE4UmNggSsZQx7DCX1XefwV2_CgBcfP45f3bXxP4MZ1aeyDdRWmCH9wuXqNNkaFAJ/s1215/Sidney+Chambers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1215" data-original-width="810" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNXUJQx0B-jKh-FJ6hmW5JNqyY_5p7kceo0ZKpNH3AOP_I6IWSmRr-JmR9ST6EzSUDmCvwM9C7r7BEE4UmNggSsZQx7DCX1XefwV2_CgBcfP45f3bXxP4MZ1aeyDdRWmCH9wuXqNNkaFAJ/s320/Sidney+Chambers.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">When you chain ply, you're basically making a long crochet chain, which you're also spinning. When I decided to start the Shave 'Em 2 Save 'Em program, I was cruising around Etsy and found this collection of dyed Clun Forest Roving from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeftHandWoolCompany?ref=yr_purchases" target="_blank">Left Hand Wool Company</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Clun Forest Sheep have white fleeces and black faces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhypE0DjTX96Uin0FxcluPeyFlOiAkoEzBUSB40Xb0ysEHceD8bebFgRRdBuEwXsVCZ6Cm9LPFO4CvNSXgBQzIGVgd4L5t1eQhW3LT797HIMOuIhQa_yqqYIHEvhov0qs4ylunf0ReJWNv1/s1600/220px-Ram_of_the_Clun_Forest_breed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="176" data-original-width="220" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhypE0DjTX96Uin0FxcluPeyFlOiAkoEzBUSB40Xb0ysEHceD8bebFgRRdBuEwXsVCZ6Cm9LPFO4CvNSXgBQzIGVgd4L5t1eQhW3LT797HIMOuIhQa_yqqYIHEvhov0qs4ylunf0ReJWNv1/s320/220px-Ram_of_the_Clun_Forest_breed.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Their wool has a tight crimp, which leads to a pretty fluffy spun wool<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Learning about the different crimps and curls in fleece has been pretty illuminating. I would have thought the long silky curls would make the softest yarn, but animals with finer crimp in their locks give much more loft and softness to the yarn. The natural crimp catches air and makes it easy to spin up a lofty yarn. This yarn did end up a little scratchy, but in the winter, who is that picky. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Usually, in my fiber adventures, I'm a natural rainbow kind of gal. Wool fleeces come in such a beautiful array of creams, browns, tans and black, I'm usually happy enough to use them as is. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
However, for this project, I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and chose this bold array of colors. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am still quite a novice spinner, and I'm always fascinated by the contrast between the roving and the spun yarn.</div>

I started by working in large stripes of color to make a scarf/shawlette, but I actually hated it. I almost threw the project away (it would seem, with the pandemic, recession, home schooling, murder, systemic racism, and riots, that my fuse is a little shorter than usual) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, I took a breath, pulled it out and reknit the project using garter stitch stripes. </div>

<br />
I have actually done quite a bit of spinning and knitting with Clun Forest wool. My parents' dear friends raise Clun Forest sheep and have gifted me a few fleeces over the years.<br />
My first <a href="https://fifthlampdown.blogspot.com/2017/02/mostly-finished.html" target="_blank">handspun sweater</a> was mostly made of their wool.<br />
However, they're not on the approved list of vendors for Shave 'Em 2 Save 'Em, thus the visit to Etsy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few takeaways: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was good to get myself out of the subtle, subdued color palate I have been used to. I am inpsired to try more exciting color choices. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Clun Forest is a lovely wool to work with, though this one ended up a little scratchy for the liking of anybody in the family. I think I will try to work a little less twist into my yarn for the next time I spin with Clun Forest, in the hopes of maximizing the loft. </div>

A couple of weeks ago I started listening to knitting podcasts for the first time in a while. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since 2016 or so I have been mostly a political podcast listener, but something about the state of the world made me want to listen to something a little less fraught. </div>

I can't remember who it was that mentioned the Shave 'Em 2 Save 'Em initiative, but I was immediately taken with the idea. </div>

The long and short of it is: they're trying to encourage knitters and spinners to use the wool of rare sheep breeds so they don't die out.<br />
It's a pretty cool project, which started last year in January, and goes until 2021.<br />
There are incentives to work with a certain number of different fleece types, and it's going to be my favorite rabbit hole, I can just tell.<br />
<br />
Last week I was cruising around Etsy and found some likely subjects. Along with many other things, our local fiber festival was canceled for safety so I felt no qualms in indulging.<br />
<br />
The first package that arrived was 5 ounces of Jacob from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/GypsyMountainFarm">Gypsy Mountain Farm</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg99vwkWhGyPqz0zA7ll65Zd3y8WlHhT13WPILq5Zonx89f9UHT983hUA5FJ8P6QckYDELV6STI2QWlKT6CZLZ5AEcigEdthorQOcEm_EmY2amPB1HD8_UFzsfQUXYNrpqda1qKvAw4sx2u/s1600/Jacob+Passport.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg99vwkWhGyPqz0zA7ll65Zd3y8WlHhT13WPILq5Zonx89f9UHT983hUA5FJ8P6QckYDELV6STI2QWlKT6CZLZ5AEcigEdthorQOcEm_EmY2amPB1HD8_UFzsfQUXYNrpqda1qKvAw4sx2u/s640/Jacob+Passport.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was nice and clean, almost no vegetal matter.<br />
I seperated the two colors out to card and spin.<br />

The yarn came out slightly inconsistent, between fingering and sport weight. I would estimate that I got around 300 yards from around 4 ounces of carded wool.<br />
I decided to make a diagonal shawlette, using various charts for lacy stripes between garter stitch sections.<br />

<br />
A few takeways:<br />
I LOVED working with the Jacob. It's a very soft and lofty wool.<br />
<br />
The colors work well together (go figure) and I almost made a stranded project. Next time I order some Jacob I will definitely make some Norwegian mittens or a hat.<br />
<br />
It's super fun to go from a bag of fleece to a garment in a week, even if the chores get seriously neglected, and I look forward to more Shave 'Em 2 Save 'Em projects flying off my needles as this year progresses.<br />

Whew, it's been a minute.<br />
<br />
I have been dealing with some major life changes for the past couple of years.<br />
For 13 years or so I stayed home with my kids, while doing part time work on the weekends and evenings teaching music and fiber art stuff.<br />
Once the Youngest was in Kindergarten I realized I didn't quite know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I tried a couple of years as a full time preschool teacher, how much different is it than staying at home with one's own kids? Turns out, pretty different. I wasn't able to find a good fit so I entered the world of temping.<br />
That has been awesome, but with COVID-19 I got let go.<br />
<br />
So here I sit, with a drastically reduced number of jobs (from 4-2) and work hours (from 40-8) and a fire in my belly to make stuff.<br />
<br />
Last fall and winter I did a lot of leatherwork, spinning, weaving, and knitting, and made up enough stock to try a couple of craft fairs. I just about broke even, so that was fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The third weekend of October is always a long one, set aside for Minnesota Educators to do some professional development, and for families to do some relational development. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year we took a couple of quick road trips to some nearby natural wonders, and a couple of unnatural wonders, too.<br />First there was a visit to <a href="https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/willowriver/">Willow River State Park</a> in Wisconsin, only a quick drive from home despite crossing state lines.</div>

It was a lovely weekend, and I am so happy that I got to share it with my favorite people. </div>

It's been a long while since I had the mental capacity to blog, and I have missed it!<br />
Back in August I started my first full-time job since The Eldest was born, and while it's pretty awesome I am exhausted when I get home.<br />
<br />
I haven't had much time or energy for much crafting time either, but I did manage to sneak in a minute or two here and there to start a silly project for The Youngest.<br />
We have a history in our family with the book Annie and the Wild Animals by Jan Brett.<br />
When The Eldest was about 5, I made her a matching sweater to the titular Annie.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hLEQPNrwpJRu5CDsfWYwG6qJlYKcLJCvQzuWMB-M0suK-GY44T4djPmkSK2Y3xHI7Bv54-vgsHhHOkTdPtKlwFFhiYlsakxQibZRtTTN6_XLNS8eKwfDXoddWg9LcS-DNbRBO85xBxph/s1600/Annie+and+the+Wild+Animals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="500" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hLEQPNrwpJRu5CDsfWYwG6qJlYKcLJCvQzuWMB-M0suK-GY44T4djPmkSK2Y3xHI7Bv54-vgsHhHOkTdPtKlwFFhiYlsakxQibZRtTTN6_XLNS8eKwfDXoddWg9LcS-DNbRBO85xBxph/s640/Annie+and+the+Wild+Animals.jpg" width="640" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8GcCMA_xR_p8F2fLExSbUbbe2jncVZKBUs0EKoY4OrAriYoMbG6lthmU1oi9FdXuz4Tf_zLBk4is_tAhdPaOruTKW275Km4XaNGgnqJDBQpwd8XJDQ6w7WQWs_LoDaTWlkBamGjDOHoY3/s1600/Annie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="380" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8GcCMA_xR_p8F2fLExSbUbbe2jncVZKBUs0EKoY4OrAriYoMbG6lthmU1oi9FdXuz4Tf_zLBk4is_tAhdPaOruTKW275Km4XaNGgnqJDBQpwd8XJDQ6w7WQWs_LoDaTWlkBamGjDOHoY3/s640/Annie.jpg" width="540" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I pulled out the sweater for The Youngest to try, it had been ravaged by time and wasn't really functional anymore. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />So, I asked The Youngest if she'd like a new one, and she asked me if I would make her the entire outfit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far I have finished the Sweater and most of the boots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SEn5EgmCScUdo0HoxoPUfRwMOzLKXq-JjH5Z4-w9kkqnkU8siKo0aVQ5sc3HsnlOl_bW-EdFdLbQK_tU1FkoT8pHayO8pt-XtILzLbdgsh1usETMeFhx_FX3iZMU8vhfNjxbR0I1XPPO/s1600/Sweater+and+Boots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SEn5EgmCScUdo0HoxoPUfRwMOzLKXq-JjH5Z4-w9kkqnkU8siKo0aVQ5sc3HsnlOl_bW-EdFdLbQK_tU1FkoT8pHayO8pt-XtILzLbdgsh1usETMeFhx_FX3iZMU8vhfNjxbR0I1XPPO/s640/Sweater+and+Boots.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
The overalls are cut out, and I think I will have time tomorrow to get those sewn up.<br />
Since The Elder and The Younger are super grown-up now they no longer ask for knitted items from their old mama, but as long as The Youngest still asks I will do my best to comply.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With the goal of visiting a place where we could see the totality of the eclipse this week, my family took our first road trip. <div>
We went all in: 5 national parks, 2 national monuments, 5 states, 16 days and 4000 miles traveled.</div>
<div>
We began in North Dakota at Theodore Roosevelt Park.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since we were in the car so much, I had tons of time for knitting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was able to start and finish a vest, inspired by the fluffy clouds in the big sky</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlqYDjG0YoUg-MSnXfjiklwLStRW2VANAP9w9804dLrZbW9hCCzg5XITGSvxd3wMyr9d1ZYDpsyYO_DpIH8ZXWysF20kY5Kpl4A5jCFKVCFHskcKepuPsSu5FxFbpwo-PY_E3XiUQ473G/s1600/Cloudy+Vest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlqYDjG0YoUg-MSnXfjiklwLStRW2VANAP9w9804dLrZbW9hCCzg5XITGSvxd3wMyr9d1ZYDpsyYO_DpIH8ZXWysF20kY5Kpl4A5jCFKVCFHskcKepuPsSu5FxFbpwo-PY_E3XiUQ473G/s640/Cloudy+Vest.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other knitting project I brought along didn't get quite finished, but I made some serious headway on it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had the book Yokes by Kate Davies, and it was hard to choose one pattern. I love everything in the book, and I will probably knit more as the years pass. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I settled on Cockatoo Brae, which is the cover pattern. (photo from the book)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I dug through my stash and found some colors I liked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7xBp92dnPISK5SwHIAEivOWzOiA-kW5CX1JTHmE9lpNjFWAxxrtFEtJrKjhcKHgV4TahAiPsMK3VisoOfGyAclrGdU2VYc0dwM9VGfSqlilfkWO7prugQRnV1J0D-m7OQuCxSSijau7mU/s1600/DSC_0763.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1064" data-original-width="1600" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7xBp92dnPISK5SwHIAEivOWzOiA-kW5CX1JTHmE9lpNjFWAxxrtFEtJrKjhcKHgV4TahAiPsMK3VisoOfGyAclrGdU2VYc0dwM9VGfSqlilfkWO7prugQRnV1J0D-m7OQuCxSSijau7mU/s640/DSC_0763.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
As we traveled around, I realized that I was seeing all the colors of my yarn in the gorgeous landscape around us.<br />

The lichen, the fauna, the water, the woods, it was all represented in my palate. </div>

We had a marvelous time, despite the odd 35 degree night, or swarms of flies in the outhouses. </div>

I can't wait to finish up this sweater, and be reminded of our travels.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6PjDlqHg_UCt_hGkaCa9FkkRr_VF6Wx0Fs0oipy0U8QCW1EOQf-gJX-ISRoj2V8d29CLhkRvuObRlEZo9e2XlhIEzYCwWGyWUBpRJO6RKpRvKVs_jJVTTn9oPI8SteqiLuTJEBzcP7hvp/s1600/miniboden.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="621" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6PjDlqHg_UCt_hGkaCa9FkkRr_VF6Wx0Fs0oipy0U8QCW1EOQf-gJX-ISRoj2V8d29CLhkRvuObRlEZo9e2XlhIEzYCwWGyWUBpRJO6RKpRvKVs_jJVTTn9oPI8SteqiLuTJEBzcP7hvp/s320/miniboden.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and thought to myself "Self, you can make that!'</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I grabbed a pattern for a basic jumper and added a face and ears. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The mouse came out so cute, I let her pick out fabric for a cat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had this knit dress cut out for about a year, so I finished that one up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqGba2j5vA4eDA3WfbPeY5nxPC02-c9paw14b16itM35LKjLXF5CTpUp_Yu0Bz1cG9fPI1RhtL_PUF5Y3Iw_JCn-b_8EFF4W0x-9QShNFQGip0L7TLGnTyU45KZf4w-leK_nWP5Sksg-B/s1600/knitcat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqGba2j5vA4eDA3WfbPeY5nxPC02-c9paw14b16itM35LKjLXF5CTpUp_Yu0Bz1cG9fPI1RhtL_PUF5Y3Iw_JCn-b_8EFF4W0x-9QShNFQGip0L7TLGnTyU45KZf4w-leK_nWP5Sksg-B/s320/knitcat.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The original jumper pattern had a version with this faux Peter Pan collar, so I did one in this amazing Space Baby fabric. When I saw it in the shop I audibly gasped. I had made an outfit for The Elder when she was 6 months old (that particular lady is 13 now!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqa0UVFyjvwX8VzZialCMoh1w6YBnnet2uXFq3jq2i3V-LgRrATAKuAoICPqRR4C_rntS-nB-QiTZYaS6j2j-QxghKNJkGcD21VPBgX8-Rh-U8doNxIodAKNQlWpaIUG09tqMFV1s_ReDf/s1600/spacebabies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqa0UVFyjvwX8VzZialCMoh1w6YBnnet2uXFq3jq2i3V-LgRrATAKuAoICPqRR4C_rntS-nB-QiTZYaS6j2j-QxghKNJkGcD21VPBgX8-Rh-U8doNxIodAKNQlWpaIUG09tqMFV1s_ReDf/s320/spacebabies.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also on the Mini Boden site there were a lot of applique dresses and so I tried that too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I still have a few more things up my sleeves, we'll see how many I finish up.<br />
The Youngest is also my Last, so I feel a little extra pressure to get these made before she decides that she doesn't want homemade clothes anymore.<br />

This sweet lady and I went to the beachy woods (or is it the woodsy beach?) on Monday. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had a picnic, built a sandcastle,</div>

<br />
I was going through my stash and found some pretty multi-color blue yarn that had been discontinued while I was working at the Yarn Shop in town.<br />
The colors were beautiful and I knew that what I wanted was this sweater right here-<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VTbIUxKDDDQezcjLqwEYbCg55Rqqu5gIiSriEooNOxkj_r43VUPm894mnLQweTje7eFb4eeBg1Rw03npxEXBp__nO1nTr8NuIzlMMurK5-MAwoQYs7h21foWAOdPF2kvrc5KM2ZZ4ptN/s1600/newtontunic1-233_medium.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VTbIUxKDDDQezcjLqwEYbCg55Rqqu5gIiSriEooNOxkj_r43VUPm894mnLQweTje7eFb4eeBg1Rw03npxEXBp__nO1nTr8NuIzlMMurK5-MAwoQYs7h21foWAOdPF2kvrc5KM2ZZ4ptN/s640/newtontunic1-233_medium.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
From a 2009 issue of Interweave Magazine.<br />
So sweet!<br />
So I got cooking, and after I was 10 inches into the second ball I remembered why the yarn was discontinued.<br />
The dyelots were ridiculously out of whack from themselves.<br />
These two yarns are the SAME DYELOT.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0lV9CwQY85iMMg71OJAAZIGhR46K0pwBzDDiiSU8nMOUUkOKUcFpbtyWU4CxYAu1kzBBYMTrEyloCmq64R0gwYuhc59XdDB5FTgEDAdjKuO80jG9SBEyFlM7J2MWU5xrN0z30c16vjPSc/s1600/dyelot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0lV9CwQY85iMMg71OJAAZIGhR46K0pwBzDDiiSU8nMOUUkOKUcFpbtyWU4CxYAu1kzBBYMTrEyloCmq64R0gwYuhc59XdDB5FTgEDAdjKuO80jG9SBEyFlM7J2MWU5xrN0z30c16vjPSc/s640/dyelot.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was pretty bummed out, but I thought to myself "Self, just weave with it. The crazy variation won't show as much and you will still get to use that beautiful yarn."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtp51C2lncIJ1CLYYJuFjetf0TDRYgledQy-D3fEdYnAYn3R-0_WPAaXm0Rya0rBISw8rvkqQ8E7RnaZJLe8vYd6EbdumG0ABQgldFXf9kXLdnzJ6EefVU2bbmhgciNjGcdFpiF4NZOtFt/s1600/blanket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtp51C2lncIJ1CLYYJuFjetf0TDRYgledQy-D3fEdYnAYn3R-0_WPAaXm0Rya0rBISw8rvkqQ8E7RnaZJLe8vYd6EbdumG0ABQgldFXf9kXLdnzJ6EefVU2bbmhgciNjGcdFpiF4NZOtFt/s640/blanket.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
So I loaded up my rigid heddle, which is only 20 inches wide so I had to make three panels to make a blanket, and in a week or so I had this lovely throw.<br />
It came out just how I thought, and I love it.<br />

I cast off my handspun sweater on Monday.<br />
It could use a little tweaking, like it totally needs blocking, and I need another pocket, and the sleeves are a little closer to three quarter than I like.<br />
However, it's wearable, and super cozy and I spun the yarn! And before I spun the white yarn I washed an entire fleece! And I dyed the bright green! And I designed it!<br />
I am a little in love with this guy.<br />
What's on your needles? </div>

I have been putting my anxiety to work lately.<br />
The easiest fix for my sad feelings is always food, but since I have probably gained 20 pounds in the last year I am trying to find another outlet.<br />
Long-time readers will know that I have a new-found obsession with spinning, though I put it on hold for a bit for the holidays.<br />
The past few days I pulled it out again, and have been getting a lot of yardage spun up.<br />
A couple of weeks ago I received a surprise package in the mail from a facebook friend, filled to bursting with spinny delights.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCTMH7NDTd61tERYEhYblOEcaf17rSTTfqkMeSAiLier1QodvjeG1yhnAf76Yzg5zsvuA3XAvHQFHUhet0duabAFdquaqntCYbuwpWqgsnpgQPP0aLVLDm1EP1L73j0eLs4doJaKONDA_E/s1600/box+of+delights.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCTMH7NDTd61tERYEhYblOEcaf17rSTTfqkMeSAiLier1QodvjeG1yhnAf76Yzg5zsvuA3XAvHQFHUhet0duabAFdquaqntCYbuwpWqgsnpgQPP0aLVLDm1EP1L73j0eLs4doJaKONDA_E/s640/box+of+delights.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I grabbed a braided top and got to work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's fascinating to me how different the final yarn ends up looking from the roving. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUgsdJpfgFuijJK-l0woOqmgvcJVJ2b2ZpJJ7rk7qSreqHQQtxu2cYX00t4MLfqlycfi3Wb-oZJbjB8djhMxMU9Oyr95jhGelxKyniVr8znMTk4SBhwQER0RcWPajRkm5huz5XVVLKA7xI/s1600/IMG_20170204_084740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUgsdJpfgFuijJK-l0woOqmgvcJVJ2b2ZpJJ7rk7qSreqHQQtxu2cYX00t4MLfqlycfi3Wb-oZJbjB8djhMxMU9Oyr95jhGelxKyniVr8znMTk4SBhwQER0RcWPajRkm5huz5XVVLKA7xI/s640/IMG_20170204_084740.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From right to left here is the unbraided top, the predrafted top, a spun single, and a plied yarn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTDoey20YoWn41rGG4_6zEcyFTlOHXrxZjz_-Xz1YtywtOpBBNKRKdLkVFRTFro_r25NhqovPos32uDMSVemh15fU-9ECXk0dhCk_vYyNzFnGYe_ZynwAU9OxLICibNY7S7dX9xIjFo14-/s1600/IMG_20170207_101716789.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTDoey20YoWn41rGG4_6zEcyFTlOHXrxZjz_-Xz1YtywtOpBBNKRKdLkVFRTFro_r25NhqovPos32uDMSVemh15fU-9ECXk0dhCk_vYyNzFnGYe_ZynwAU9OxLICibNY7S7dX9xIjFo14-/s640/IMG_20170207_101716789.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here you can really see the difference between the roving and the yarn. I am still a total beginner but I am trying to practice every day and I think I am seeing some improvement. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12mLRd9ith-cby4mfXagL93XyUvQt4hcV0Cir-XgX7OuNewe-9Y2JNjnARd5_xhewO4Fnaz7tYT575c5KFqBeo9jBbDaeO1fKznTh9yif0pNqCXcTrsvzXcuvlYVAhkWwKSNpcMDBX3JO/s1600/IMG_20170207_101800901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12mLRd9ith-cby4mfXagL93XyUvQt4hcV0Cir-XgX7OuNewe-9Y2JNjnARd5_xhewO4Fnaz7tYT575c5KFqBeo9jBbDaeO1fKznTh9yif0pNqCXcTrsvzXcuvlYVAhkWwKSNpcMDBX3JO/s640/IMG_20170207_101800901.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The colors of this one are just perfect with the sweater I have been plugging away at. I don't know if I will incorporate it into the actual sweater, or maybe a matching hat?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, my pants thank me for channeling my nervous energy into this project rather than more cookies...</div>

It's been a while.<br />
Christmas happened, with all the attendant family time and coziness.<br />
I am in a bit of a funk. Just moving from home to work to home to the couch.<br />
This week we joined a gym in hopes of getting my middle-aged ass moving.<br />
I don't really have a plan yet, but with a few hours of my own each day while all of the kids are in school I have many opportunities to get to work.<br />
The thing is, there are so many things I would love to do in addition to working out.<br />
In December I took a class in glass-blowing and made a tumbler (which turned out more like a vase) and I really caught the bug.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnxPpfyDpNrs1Dwu1akplhaiW54smcf9XGXyQOgSn_lR3J87Pac01MeLz0QUpv75-ey3eN5d9A_4xPPjAjeDEQUi4Yvpl3lGma0CuqhMCL33SMrDMTCuYlPPitE5So9m1X05MwonXSwHZb/s1600/glass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnxPpfyDpNrs1Dwu1akplhaiW54smcf9XGXyQOgSn_lR3J87Pac01MeLz0QUpv75-ey3eN5d9A_4xPPjAjeDEQUi4Yvpl3lGma0CuqhMCL33SMrDMTCuYlPPitE5So9m1X05MwonXSwHZb/s640/glass.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
And while I was there I was reminded of how much I used to love working with clay.<br />
So, in continuation of my previous foray into a <a href="http://fifthlampdown.blogspot.com/2016/10/mid-life-renaissance.html">#midliferenaissance</a> I hereby pledge to take more classes and explore some interests that I have been neglecting since I had kids.<br />
There will still be much knitting as well, though if this week is any indicator I need to be much more careful with my hands as I cut my thumb on a mandolin a couple of days ago and bruised the hell out of my finger moving a table.<br />
I just finished up a shawl, the first I have tried with this method of construction.<br />
It's called <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/fifthlampdown/somerled">Somerled </a>and it's a Scottish Hap.<br />
It is was worked as a border first,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/418735197/IMG_20161230_192632338_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/418735197/IMG_20161230_192632338_medium2.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
and then you pick up the inside of the border and knit the inner border. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/420814910/IMG_20170107_125627_337_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/420814910/IMG_20170107_125627_337_medium2.jpg" /></a></div>
Lastly, you knit the center and pick up as you go.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/421553306/IMG_20170109_205806_691_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/421553306/IMG_20170109_205806_691_medium2.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
Then you have to block it, because it's pretty rumply.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/421553215/IMG_20170109_205857_883_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/fifthlampdown/421553215/IMG_20170109_205857_883_medium2.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And then, you send it away to get blocked by a professional because this looks terrible.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't have this back from the blocker yet, but I can't wait to see how it turned out. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In fact. I loved this so much I am planning a new one, using some reclaimed yarn from a sweater that I loved that was attacked by moths (little beasts.)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The new plan is to add some different laces, I don't know how that will go yet, time to do some research.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What's on your needles?</div>
<br />
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Earlier this week my mom and I took a trip to the Bachman's Idea House (our favorite destination for decorating ideas) and saw an adorable tomten ornament. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I figured they would be easy enough to make, and it wouldn't cost me $8.99 each.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I grabbed a branch from my back yard and cut it into about 3 inch lengths, then I assembled the rest of my tools and materials. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRfWvZX7fld5Ienx6L-DZhxXd0ckq6vvfh-ZAJchjzierQALarMQBCCXwpxn4zO8-yQDgPa2wE4UXY4yLZcp5hf91uxNXDjuuGtXHpn-nLX4MJN5DsFEKOtew6Wn8IGi2aDFuLHKt01uu/s1600/IMG_20161202_094456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRfWvZX7fld5Ienx6L-DZhxXd0ckq6vvfh-ZAJchjzierQALarMQBCCXwpxn4zO8-yQDgPa2wE4UXY4yLZcp5hf91uxNXDjuuGtXHpn-nLX4MJN5DsFEKOtew6Wn8IGi2aDFuLHKt01uu/s640/IMG_20161202_094456.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU_eCST5PJNsfNl3ytsF0aVWtM_lz3KAgFQtKWG-dAhe0LzBqBcJXxo42sXaYXUCruJFdf3GmpMef8uoMB-bcl9i6-s826iFkkHMsnulO53LvTChpHa7AMWs00fTVPvw9SeEHcq6fx-qna/s1600/IMAG1439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU_eCST5PJNsfNl3ytsF0aVWtM_lz3KAgFQtKWG-dAhe0LzBqBcJXxo42sXaYXUCruJFdf3GmpMef8uoMB-bcl9i6-s826iFkkHMsnulO53LvTChpHa7AMWs00fTVPvw9SeEHcq6fx-qna/s640/IMAG1439.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, I pushed a nail through the center of a half-yard length of ribbon and then nailed into the top of the branch segments. Next, I threaded on a large wooden bead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic9BluiVgnWnWK_4HSdpey6gqS6fXLZ-RxiACBrVQ1p3SEEaY8eaJp4xcy3vaWQyvwhIBEyqa5JWGyxxmEFHTytlNhdr8zJxoZkGjgCJqZOHbnNcXc_QR7aE39Y1rHjnS2I7pevgjQ2FHr/s1600/IMG_20161202_095647.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic9BluiVgnWnWK_4HSdpey6gqS6fXLZ-RxiACBrVQ1p3SEEaY8eaJp4xcy3vaWQyvwhIBEyqa5JWGyxxmEFHTytlNhdr8zJxoZkGjgCJqZOHbnNcXc_QR7aE39Y1rHjnS2I7pevgjQ2FHr/s640/IMG_20161202_095647.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was a step ably performed by my faithful assistant.</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjerx9vPEihvUJ25Rykd4NvBfbtlzW20nCam-_VOaHiX04RaGASRYaiPnj1vaKqp3lUgkDNFxT0-YgXjwbmLxWa6ktFGLHGhLPQhITcSBjgElPojk3BIv7Tr52V3AmguZnxfuvAZlDt-XN-/s1600/IMAG1446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjerx9vPEihvUJ25Rykd4NvBfbtlzW20nCam-_VOaHiX04RaGASRYaiPnj1vaKqp3lUgkDNFxT0-YgXjwbmLxWa6ktFGLHGhLPQhITcSBjgElPojk3BIv7Tr52V3AmguZnxfuvAZlDt-XN-/s640/IMAG1446.jpg" width="360" /></a><br />
Next I tied a length of freshly combed wool roving with the ribbon for the beard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2INm_eUCvP8n0ZCuQ22Mn7-RfOy056Hvn-pQsUhjqf1oQXDcaOTO4dKdEESsyXDwFHCSPyp9BxhGQeqMijt9o8aySZFg_NB2cZE6YtXldy_rhnIz1BT85YndCg7Ch3SsueEH8Tw9yXYda/s1600/IMAG1441.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2INm_eUCvP8n0ZCuQ22Mn7-RfOy056Hvn-pQsUhjqf1oQXDcaOTO4dKdEESsyXDwFHCSPyp9BxhGQeqMijt9o8aySZFg_NB2cZE6YtXldy_rhnIz1BT85YndCg7Ch3SsueEH8Tw9yXYda/s640/IMAG1441.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
Then came lots of braiding, and more braiding and finally a little hat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiasDvA2_PJVktI8qfy-wWc8tYLBIbOdOWpjHVQVaF4q6FUXNSQ2AwsRlgr2Gk8GlaatRsdP20KU13JP0K5dxQxhAJ4mGcmSsPeI6RxoOQvEB0q4nNuIiMILLOnXZyeXsMKOlWiOu_RcMza/s1600/IMG_20161202_121809.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiasDvA2_PJVktI8qfy-wWc8tYLBIbOdOWpjHVQVaF4q6FUXNSQ2AwsRlgr2Gk8GlaatRsdP20KU13JP0K5dxQxhAJ4mGcmSsPeI6RxoOQvEB0q4nNuIiMILLOnXZyeXsMKOlWiOu_RcMza/s640/IMG_20161202_121809.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
The Youngest made her own (I did the nailing and tied two knots, but she attached the hair and sewed her own hat!) and she decided that since this one was a princess she would need a pink hat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcv_mUs6uxVpRmL9c_qCgcis_YVkrH49aWOjIdJa2mCXzw-FGxfn72xwrhDLVafpDMqkZ6eW1zbk5n9WVvjATNEGd0hulsX09MBxoerC0ZvVML3yqLfUBSFOgeJfwGIx39uWctQqdXhdJ9/s1600/IMAG1450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcv_mUs6uxVpRmL9c_qCgcis_YVkrH49aWOjIdJa2mCXzw-FGxfn72xwrhDLVafpDMqkZ6eW1zbk5n9WVvjATNEGd0hulsX09MBxoerC0ZvVML3yqLfUBSFOgeJfwGIx39uWctQqdXhdJ9/s640/IMAG1450.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
As a secular Presbyterian, I usually go for the winter-themed in Christmas ornaments rather than the religious ones and these fit the bill perfectly.<br />
The best part of this is that I had all the materials on hand, so they were all free! (okay, I know I bought those materials but not for this project, so I stand by my earlier statement.)<br />
Hope you're all doing well out there in internetland.</div>

I cast on a new sweater on Sunday with the yarn I have been spinning, and I am slowly making my way through it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15181709_10210078842781096_589934245265663749_n.jpg?oh=12cbaf7cfb365750fee027f2e7189033&oe=58CD5AFF" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15181709_10210078842781096_589934245265663749_n.jpg?oh=12cbaf7cfb365750fee027f2e7189033&oe=58CD5AFF" width="640" /></a></div>
There are 6 colors of yarn here, three from a pack that was graciously gifted to me by a friend, one natural grey sheepy's fleece, one natural white sheepy's fleece, and the green is hand-dyed with marigold. I am excited to see how it develops. The plan is to use all of the colors in a Icelandic-inspired yoke.<br />
First I have lots of plain body to knit, and that should be a nice calming activity while I am still processing the election.<br />
What's on your needles?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Spinning has been very therapeutic for me over this election season. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think I have spun about 800 yards or so. It's been about 100 yards per day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week, since the weather has been dramatically warmer than usual, I put out a call for marigolds and my mom and a few friends offered me their remaining blossoms. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These have all been dyed with marigolds. The first dye batch had some nasturtiums in it and I wonder if that's why the yarn came out so very bright green. I love it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I let that batch cool and then heated it up again and I got the darker gold below. The largest yellow skein, second from the top, was a new batch of dye. I really liked that one too. In fact, when I finished dyeing the yarn I had so much dye left that I threw in a couple of shirts of mine and dyed them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have another skein in the pot right now that I was promised would come out pink (avocado skins), but the yarn isn't taking the dye very well and it's just kinda brown. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will see how that shapes up after a few more hours to soak up the color</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj82NycXGFUCjvdEmtHgJHsM5uCNDoU_IR6DwqswgDDiBQ_Yli0UEsQXXN4ppH1bnQpCvryq29iVkpiyYrDfoJG4NGmpy_y7xisdh-Con1aLN1QbglD912u9I6_XFtELnSzTIZPRXTXiLiw/s1600/dyeing+experiments.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj82NycXGFUCjvdEmtHgJHsM5uCNDoU_IR6DwqswgDDiBQ_Yli0UEsQXXN4ppH1bnQpCvryq29iVkpiyYrDfoJG4NGmpy_y7xisdh-Con1aLN1QbglD912u9I6_XFtELnSzTIZPRXTXiLiw/s640/dyeing+experiments.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I have tried dyeing spun yarn and also combed top. The top was surprisingly easy to dye and then process. The only skein above that was dyed after spinning is the second from the top, as I look at it.<br />
The spinning is still pretty inconsistent, but I am pleased overall.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwwt8bHSX4mFjnxZEYmqaC3BPrjuxUra6mto5fcMXFSKoiLDeszyRAJ6b52l6VUFCpgcRwTcf0jANKDalw_G962G0EAwpXCEu-RNvDI_nYCZ3YzSYeNp3nL1gixVIUdiEZcfoDvC6o3Lxf/s1600/14794361216612022504567.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwwt8bHSX4mFjnxZEYmqaC3BPrjuxUra6mto5fcMXFSKoiLDeszyRAJ6b52l6VUFCpgcRwTcf0jANKDalw_G962G0EAwpXCEu-RNvDI_nYCZ3YzSYeNp3nL1gixVIUdiEZcfoDvC6o3Lxf/s640/14794361216612022504567.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
I have great plans for a sweater with all of this right here: the green is the first skein I dyed that didn't make it into the other photo, the teal, blue and darker gray are a bfl/silk blend from a generous friend, the browns are alpaca I snagged at a fiber festival Saturday before last and the light gray is from my farmer friend.<br />
Now I need to pick a pattern.<br />
Maybe <a href="http://tincanknits.com/pattern-PK-northshore.html">this one</a> with a white body? or something like <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ryrau">this</a> or I could just make another <a href="https://www.brooklyntweed.com/shop/grettir/">Grettir</a>.<br />
The main problem is that the fleeces aren't all quite the same color, and I don't have any more of this white. But I could do a border on the hem and cuffs in one of the colors and I think I would almost have enough.<br />

I don't have any words about the political situation. It's too painful. </div>

This is how I have been coping with the stress of this election.</div>

The other day I found a <a href="http://moonsongfiberworks.blogspot.com/2011/11/how-to-make-wool-comb-and-hackle-set.html">tutorial </a>to make wool combs. The real things are over $100 and this seemed like a good way to dip my toes in.</div>

I ended up with about 500 yards of worsted-ish weight yarn from my first half-fleece. The remainder was little fluffs and chunks, which I think could be carded or used for doll stuffing.<br />
I will post about my weekend adventure in a minute, this post has been sitting in my blogger for a week or so, so I thought I would finish it up.</div>
